Audit, Systems Build, or Custom Development: Which One Do You Need?

"Do I need a full rebuild, or just some things connected?" is usually the first question after someone takes the free systems check — and it's a fair one. Here's how the three engagement types actually differ, so you can tell which one your business needs before you talk to anyone.

Audit & Roadmap: when you don't know what's actually wrong

You know something's inefficient, but you can't point to exactly what. Maybe it's the CRM, maybe it's how leads get handed off, maybe it's five small things instead of one big one.

An audit maps every tool, workflow, and manual step in your business, then hands you a prioritized, written plan — even if you never hire anyone to build it. It's the right starting point when you need clarity more than you need a solution yet.

Timeline: 2 weeks, fixed fee.

Systems Build: when the tools exist, they just don't talk to each other

This is the most common need. You already have a CRM, a scheduling tool, an invoicing system — they just operate as five separate islands, and someone (probably you) is the bridge between them, copying information by hand.

A Systems Build connects what you already have: leads flow automatically, invoices generate from completed work, follow-ups fire without you remembering to send them. Nothing gets replaced — it gets wired together.

Timeline: 4–8 weeks, project-based.

Custom Development: when the thing you need doesn't exist yet

Sometimes the gap isn't between two tools — it's that no tool does what you actually need. A client portal with your specific approval workflow. An internal tool for a process that's unique to how you run things.

This is real software development, not integration work, which is why it's scoped and priced differently — a longer, higher-ticket engagement because it's building something new rather than connecting something that already exists.

Timeline: 6–12 weeks, project-based.

How to tell which one you need

If you're not sure, that uncertainty is itself the answer: start with an Audit. It's the lowest-commitment way to get a professional, specific answer instead of guessing — and it directly informs whether a Systems Build is enough, or whether part of what you need has to be built from scratch.

Book a systems audit or take the free systems check first if you want a quick read before that conversation.
